Anna Useli and Kristin Gerdes (freelance subtitlers and translators):

Audiovisual Translation, Challenges and Developments in Subtitling

Chair: Stefania Puddu (Middlesex University)

The speakers will provide a brief overview of the skills required to overcome the challenges and constraints of subtitling both for foreign language programmes as well as for the deaf and hard of hearing. The latest developments in technology, such as MT based programs, speech recognition, crowd-sourcing and the quality issues that can arise when the necessary quality controls are not in place will also be considered. Finally, the practical side of being a professional subtitler will be addressed, including typical types of clients, pricing, and the Subtitlers’ Association Subtle.

Kristin Gerdes
– translation degree for English and French into German, University Saarbrücken, Germany, with thesis on translating cultural references in subtitling (2003)
– over 10 years experience as professional freelance subtitler, translator and editor, based in London
– Committee member and treasurer of Subtle, the Subtitlers’ Association since 2009

Anna Useli
– Masters degree in applied translation studies for English and Spanish into Italian, London Metropolitan University, with thesis on website localisation (2010)
– 4 years experience as professional freelance subtitler, translator and editor, based in London
– Committee member of Subtle, the Subtitlers’ Association since 2012
